Brixental is a municipality located in the eastern region of Tyrol, Austria. It lies within the Kitzbühel district and is home to a population of 2,082 people, according to the 2011 census.

Located right at the border with Germany and in close proximity to Salzburg, this delightful little town is known for its picturesque alpine views and charming atmosphere. With a history that can be traced back several hundred years, it’s easy to see why so many people flock here each year.

The area surrounding Brixental has plenty of things to do and explore – from popular ski resorts like SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental and lift systems stretching over ninety kilometers across five separate villages, there’s something for everyone. For culture buffs, there are numerous churches with stunning frescoes, as well as an abundance of castles dating from medieval times.

Fun Facts:

  • Brixental is in the Kitzbühel Alps.
  • SkiWelt has over 176 miles of piste trails, 90 major ski lifts, and an 830 skiable mile vertical.
  • Legend has it that when St Anthony wished to build his church on the top of a hill near Kirchdorf, he had to summon the help of some wood spirits called Rautenberg, who served as assistants and builders throughout construction.

Attractions:

  • Burg Fleckenstein: One of the most significant historical landmarks in the Brixental area is Burg Fleckenstein. Originally constructed by one of Tyrol’s preeminent families in the 13th century, this castle held strategic importance in medieval times and was used to secure trade routes between Austria, Germany and Italy. The ruins are now open to visitors who can explore the castle grounds and get a glimpse into its illustrious past.
  • Grandiose Churches: The area also boasts beautiful churches with incredible frescoes – several of these churches date back to long before the 19th century, including St Anthony’s Church in Kirchdorf and St Nicholas’ Church in Westendorf. These majestic buildings are sure to inspire awe in any visitor thanks to their stunning architecture and intricate works of art.
  • Schloss Weerhaupten: Brixental is home to many grand castles like Schloss Weerhaupten, which was built as a hunting lodge for Archduke Karl von Teschen at the beginning of the 16th century. This imposing building is an example of Tyrolean High Gothic style architecture with lavish decorations and intricately carved walls – a symbol of wealth and power for hundreds of years!
