- Greenville was first settled in 1771 by German and Swiss immigrants who came to the area looking for religious freedom.
- In 1831, it was officially designated as a town when merchants opened their stores near the current railroad depot site – thus making it one of the oldest towns in eastern North Carolina!
- The town became known as “Tobacco City” due to its abundance of tobacco farms, providing much-needed income to many local families during both World Wars.
- It later became a major manufacturing center in the 20th century with industries ranging from textiles, paper goods, pharmaceuticals and more!
- The area has since become more heavily focused on education, with East Carolina University being established nearby in 1907 – making it now one of the most popular college destinations for students around North America!

Greenville Town Hall
Greenville’s Town Hall is located in the heart of downtown and is the centerpiece of city government. It was built in 1851, making it one of the oldest public buildings in town. The building has witnessed a lot of history since its inception, hosting weekly meetings for the city council and judicial hearings on local laws.
Pitt County Courthouse
The Pitt County Courthouse stands tall at the corner of Greene and Main Streets in downtown Greenville and was completed in 1872. It was originally built with a much more modest design but was later expanded with a grand second-story addition which included an ornate rotunda that dominates the structure today. The courthouse offers legal services for local citizens and is also used for other civic functions like community hearings or meetings between city leaders.
Church Street Park
Church Street Park lies behind St Mary’s Catholic Church near downtown Greenville and features lush gardens, walking trails, and picnic areas perfect for taking in the beauty of nature while enjoying some fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of town. It is also home to a historic stone house that dates back to 1835. It served as a temporary storehouse during World War II – giving it significance beyond its charming aesthetic appeal!
