“Free Fallin” by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne is a popular single that has been featured in various movies, including Fun House (2000), The Sopranos (Episode 2.13), and Jerry Maguire (1996). The song took the #7 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles and reached #2 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50.

Fun Facts:

• Tom Petty was the guitarist and lead vocalist of the Heartbreakers Band, which got started in 1976. He was also a member of other bands and music groups, including Travelling Wilburys and Mud crutch.

• “Free Fallin” is part of Petty’s debut solo album, “Full Moon Fever Album.

• Tom Petty produced the hit under the MCA label with the help of Phil Jones, Jeff Lynne, and Mike Campbell on October 27, 1989.

• Petty wrote “Free Fallin” with Jeff Lynne. The two were sitting around and trying to come up with a song when Lynne got Petty to say the phrase “Free Fallin.” The song was recorded the next day.

• Despite popular belief, Petty said the song was not inspired by a specific person. Rather, the song denotes things he saw during his regular drives along Ventura Boulevard.

•  “Free Fallin” hit the #7 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. This was Petty’s third and final hit to reach the top 10.

• It was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best male Rock Vocal Performance.

• The hit has received airplay on the MTV Music Video Awards and the Super Bowl XLII Half-Time Show events.

• Tom Petty died in October 2017 as a result of an accidental overdose. His memorial service was held four days before his 67th birthday.
