“Don’t Cry” was released on September 16, 1991, by the acclaimed American hard rock band Guns N’ Roses.

Guns N’ Roses was founded in 1985 and, since then, has had a few members join in and leave. The band was founded in Los Angeles, California, and they signed their first deal with Geffen Records in 1986.

Fun Facts:

• Credits for the song’s lyrics go to Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin before the band ever got started. It was written after Rose and Stradlin fell for the same girl, and she couldn’t choose between the two. While talking at a park, this mystery girl told Axl, “Don’t cry, Bill,” inspiring the song’s title.

• Blind Melon lead singer Shannon Hoon provided backup vocals for the song. He also helped with the song “November Rain.”

• “Don’t Cry” was part of the Use Your Illusion I and II albums. These two albums were the third and fourth studio albums produced by the seven-person band.

• Use Your Illusion I was released On September 17, 1991, the same day as Use Your Illusion II. Both albums were released right before the Use Your Illusion Tour.

• The versions of “Don’t Cry” differ in lyrics. The original lyrics are featured on the album Use Your Illusion I, with changes in some verses in Use Your Illusion II.

• The Illusion albums have sold 35 million copies, with 14 million copies in the US.

• “Don’t Cry” peaked at #8 on the UK Singles Chart and #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The hit single did exceptionally well in Ireland, Finland, and Portugal, reaching the top spot.

• The song also reached the top five in Australia, Denmark, and Switzerland.
