Key Buildings and Attractions

The city offers plenty for visitors, including historical points of interest. Here are a few to check out.

The Castle Gardens

The Castle Gardens, one of Lisburn’s most popular attractions, was initially constructed in the 17th century by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. It is believed that the castle used to be a royal palace centuries ago. Today, visitors can explore the beautiful arboretum, vegetable garden and secret pathways located in this area.

St Peter’s Church

St Peter’s Church dates back to 1688, originally built as an Anglican parish church. It has been refurbished multiple times and still serves as a place of worship today. As you explore the church grounds, you will find historical monuments such as gravestones and a Celtic Cross embedded into its walls which date back to the 18th century.

The Maze Long Kesh Prison

The Maze Long Kesh Prison opened in 1971. It quickly became synonymous with political instability due to its use as an internment camp for Irish Republican prisoners during the Troubles period in Northern Ireland. However, following the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, it was renovated into a peace center where visitors can learn about this tumultuous period of history through interactive exhibitions.
