Oxford

The city of Oxford, located only an hour and a half away from London, was first established well over 1,000 years ago. It received its name in the year 900 AD as a nod to its river crossing, also known as a “ford” for oxen.

Oxford is home to a world-renowned university, which was established in the area during the 11th century. Oxford University, founded in the year 1096, is the second oldest university in the world, surpassed only by the University of Bologna, which was built only 8 years before. But, Oxford University is not only recognized for its longevity; it is also the top-ranked university worldwide. The university originally only taught religion, and it wasn’t until about 200 years ago that its curriculum was expanded to cover a wide array of subjects and careers.

Because of the university, the city of Oxford has managed to retain a lot of its quaintness and magical appearance. These attributes have turned Oxford into a popular tourist destination together with the large number of activities available, the most popular of which is punting down the river on a wooden boat.

Those who visit Oxford 2ill find themselves immersed in the world of Harry Potter because many scenes were filmed there. Additionally, Lewis Carroll was inspired to write Alice In Wonderland in Oxford and used one of Dean Liddell’s daughters, named Alice, as inspiration for the story.
